All right, did I do that right? Yeah, 1,202 over 2 times 550. So this is going to be the same thing as, I could write this, 52 divided, well, let me just add first. ![]() If we're going to take 550 divided by 2, this is going to be, I could write this as times, actually, let me just, let me just simply this Number of terms we have, times 550, so what is this going to be? Well, we could simplify this a little bit. All right, so we're going to take the sum of the first 550 terms, and it's going to beĮqual to the first term, so that's 52 plus the last term, the nth term, 1150, it's really just the average of those two, the average of the first and the last term and then times the Of terms you actually have, so if we were to try toĪpply it to this case, we're trying to take the sum, sum of the first 550 terms, I'll do this in a newĬolor just for kicks. Mean of the first and the last terms, you could say the average, in, I guess, everyday language, average of the first and last terms and then times the number N terms is going to be the first term plus the nth term over 2, so it's really the, it's really the arithmetic Just doesn't come out of thin air, so the formula for the sum of an arithmetic series, so the sum of the first Good to get a sense that, you know, that this formula Videos, we have proved this formula, but it's always And there is a formula for the sum of an arithmetic series, andįirst we're just going to apply the formula, but then we're going to getĪ little bit of an intuitive sense for why that formula works, and actually, in other We are increasing by the same amount each time. We can recognize this as an arithmetic series. Term, we're increasing by the same amount, we're increasing by 2, we're increasing by 2, The sum of all of these, and since each successive ![]() We're just going to keep adding 2 for each successive term, all the way until we get to 1150, and we're going to take So that gives us a good feel for this sum, for this series. This first term is going to be, it evalutes to 52 plus, this next term is 2 times 2 plus 50 is going to be 54, plus the next term, 2 times 3 is 6 plus 50 is 56, and we're going to go all the way, all the way to our last term, 2 times 550 is 1100 plus 50 is going to be 1150. Going all the way until we get to the last term, when k is equal to 550, it's going to be 2 times 550 plus 50. When k is equal to 3, it's going to be 2 times 3 plus 50. When k is equal to 2, it's going to be 2 times 2 plus 50. This is going to look like, when k is equal 1, this is going to be 2 times 1 plus 50. Out the sum a little bit just so that I can get aįeel for what it looks like, so let's see. So this is a sum from kĮquals 1 to k equals 550, so we're going to have 550 terms here and it's the sum from kĮquals 1 to k equals 550 of 2k plus 50, so whenever I try to evaluate a series, I like to just expand So assuming you've had a go at it, let's work through this together. See if you can figure out what this evaluates to. The takeaway for filmmakers is that your work is at risk for a trademark lawsuit regardless of the size of your production (or the size of the plaintiff’s operation). You might not be expecting a trademark lawsuit from a business coach in Seattle, however, but it happened to Oprah’s O magazine. It’s easy to imagine how naming your new film La-La-Landing would be inviting a lawsuit. In addition, trademark lawsuits can come from anyone, not just the big production companies or corporations-and not just from within the film industry. However, if Git-R-Done Productions felt like a single convenience store on the coast of Mississippi warrants a trademark lawsuit, no film-however small-is exempt from that risk. Too many small-budget and indie filmmakers mistakenly believe that the size of their production limits their exposure to lawsuits. but they are still entitled to trademark protection in the context of gasoline, cigarettes, and computers.” Size Is No Immunity from a Trademark Lawsuit The court held that “Shell, Camel, and Apple did not invent those words. That’s why, in 2015, they filed suit against the convenience store, not only for using the name Gitrdone, but claiming the store also displayed a rusted tow truck reminiscent of Larry the Cable Guy’s popular animated character Mater (from the Pixar film Cars).Īlthough the convenience store countered that Larry the Cable Guy didn’t invent the phrase, the courts denied that logic. If other businesses can make money off of the phrase without licensing, then the trademarks have no value. Here’s how trademark lawsuits can affect filmmakers of all sizes and how you can take steps to minimize your risk. While this particular lawsuit is between a comedian and a convenience store, it demonstrates a risk too many filmmakers take on-especially small-budget, indie productions. Whatever else Woods may have accomplished with his convenience store, he certainly got it done in attracting a trademark lawsuit from Daniel Lawrence Whitney (better known as the comedian Larry the Cable Guy) and Git-R-Done Productions. This is so small, the human mind can’t really comprehend it. The latest chips now have transistors under 10 nanometers in width, with the latest achievement being sub-5 nanometers (more specifically, that’s the width of the logic gate in a transistor). Today’s chips, no larger than your fingernail, have billions. Moore’s essay contemplated a single chip with 65,000 transistors. The first microprocessor, built by Intel in 1971, contained 2,300 transistors, at a node size of 10 microns each. There is fierce competition between manufacturers to build chips with smaller and better transistors. At the same time, consumer demand has skyrocketed. The invention of the microprocessor was what made personal computers even possible.Īs chips get smaller and more sophisticated, the manufacturing processes also become more complex and difficult. Semiconductors with a CPU integrated into it are known as microprocessors, while chips with a CPU, as well as memory, a clock and an I/O unit are microcontrollers. There are different types of chips that have other elements integrated into them, including central processing units (CPUs). When Moore talked about dense integrated circuits, he was talking specifically about semiconductors (colloquially also called a “chip”), the brain that powers pretty much all technology today. More computing power means not just more speed, but also more capacity, for a practically infinite number of applications. (Originally, it was actually one year, but he later revised his statement.) In layman’s terms, it means that computer speed doubles every two years, while the cost is halved. In his essay, Moore predicted that the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit (IC) would double about every two years. That chemist was Gordon Moore, the (eventual) co-founder of Intel, and the “rule” is known as Moore’s Law. His essay was quite technical, but it has been boiled down to a rule that has been often referenced over the years when people talk about the speed of technological advancement in computers. In 1965, a remarkably prescient young chemist working at Fairfield Semiconductor wrote an essay for “Electronics,” a trade magazine. How much smaller can chips get? Share your thoughts in the comments below.FebruAV Buyers.Club, Blogs, BlogSquad, ProAV News, rAVe, RTA , Moore, who died in March, warned in 2015: "Someday it has to stop." This includes using new design techniques and materials, as well as tasking AI systems with building new chips. “There’s just no way.”Ĭhip designers are now trying to find new ways to sustain advances in processing power. "Once you get to 1.5nm, maybe 1nm, Moore’s Law is 100 per cent dead,” Ben Bajarin, a technology analyst at Silicon Valley-based Creative Strategies, told the Financial Times. After that, the situation changes as the number of transistors that can be packed onto a wafer starts to run into the fundamental limits of physics. The smallest chips currently in production are around 3nm and 2nm chips are expected to arrive around 2025. But Moore's Law has recently fallen behind schedule, with the cadence now closer to three years. ![]() This projection, subsequently revised to every two years, became known as Moore's Law. But how much further can we go? Intel co-founder Gordon Moore predicted in 1965 that the number of transistors that can be squeezed onto a chip of the same size would roughly double every year. Today, the smallest chips in the world are roughly the size of a fingernail and contain about 50bn transistors. This in turn has led to technological advances as more transistors equals more computing power. Over the last five decades, transistors have continued to shrink, making it possible to fit more of them into the same area on a silicon wafer. ![]() In order to do so, they're heavily reliant on the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photolithography machines, which are only sold by Dutch-headquartered ASML.ĪSML's EUV machines "print" transistors almost as small as the diameter of a human chromosome onto sheets of silicon to make a microprocessor. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), Samsung Electronics and Intel Corporation are the only companies capable of manufacturing the world's smallest and most advanced chips. But experts are warning that we may be approaching the limit of what's physically possible. How small can semiconductors get? For decades, they've become tinier and tinier, allowing huge advances in computing. |
